Chateau Pichon-Longueville, Pauillac, 1997
I am a red wine person. And there are a number of areas in the world that I like a lot. That I know the wine. Pauillac is not one of those, and because of that it is very interesting to have as the first wine I really try to remember from a region that is good. But, I like Cabernet Sauvignon. I have been on the left bank and tried quite a lot of different wines. And had various Bordeaux, and I have always been disappointed. Too thin, not enough poof. But I think that is because I personally in general think merlot is a too weak grape. I am looking for more stable cab.
This bordeaux was different. I would definitely like Bordeaux more if they are like this. I guess this is like it should be. It is smooth, still have some tannins. Some vanilla, surprisingly high level for a red wine, so maybe they treat their casks differently from other places. But as I said earlier, I am not used to Bordeaux. Given my surprisingly positive view on this wine, I am obviously learning, or finally have a really good cab dominated Bordeaux. (++)
